Turbine Equipment Installation Begins at Akkuyu NPP Unit 1

August 17, 2022, Büyükeceli, Mersin Province, Turkey. – The installation of Unit 1 turbine hall turbine condenser has started at the Akkuyu NPP construction site. The condenser comprises more than 10 pre-assembled units. One of them is a condensate removal line, which comprises four sections weighting 42 tons in total and is designed for removal of the exhaust steam condenser.

The condenser arrived at the Akkuyu NPP construction site disassembled and comprises many structural parts. So far, the first stage of the condenser assembly has been completed; it took 32 days and included the installation and preparation for welding of the condensate removal line. Once assembled, the condenser will be 25-meter long, 16-meter wide, 17-meter high, while the total weight of the whole structure will exceed 1000 tons.

It will take about 10 days to weld the section, which will be followed by the stage of assembly of auxiliary structures for the installation of lower and middle sections. Highly skilled personnel performs all installation works on the turbine condenser.

"I congratulate all the builders and thermal & mechanical equipment installation specialists on the start of a key operation in the Unit 1 turbine compartment. It is an important and crucial stage of the turbine island construction, which will be followed by the installation of the main equipment of the turbine generator plant. Construction works and equipment installation are performed at the site in shifts, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week – crews of professional builders, installers, welders and other specialists work at a brisk pace and show smooth team work," noted Sergei Butckikh, First Deputy Chief Executive Officer of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC –Director of the NPP under Construction.

The turbine condenser was manufactured by JSC Machine-Building Plant ZiO Podolsk, an enterprise of Rosatom State Corporation, which specializes in manufacturing highly sophisticated heat-exchange equipment for enterprises of the fuel & energy complex, namely nuclear and thermal power plants, oil & gas industry, and shipbuilding.

Earlier, in June 2022, the foundation concrete pouring for the turbine set installation was completed in the turbine building of the Unit 1. After the foundation had obtained the required strength, the specialists installed embedded parts and finally started installing elements of the turbine condenser. The turbine set will be installed there later.

All the construction stages are thoroughly monitored by the foreign independent inspection organizations and the Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NDK), a national regulatory authority of Turkey.
