Reactor cavity lining completed at Akkuyu NPP Unit 2
September 21, 2022, Büyükeceli, Mersin Province, Türkiye. – Installation works on Unit 2 reactor cavity lining have been completed at the Akkuyu NPP Construction Site. Lining is a metal structure located inside the inner sealed containment of the reactor plant in the NPP's reactor building. It is designed to reinforce concrete structures, improve the sealing and ensure resistance to potential loads during power unit operation and refuelling.
Reactor lining is made of a special stainless steel, which contains chromium and nickel. Its service life is 100 years. Such material requires special welding technique.
Reactor cavity lining, a 9.1m high and 8m diameter metal structure weighing more than 16 tons is installed at 26 m elevation. Due to the cargo's large dimensions, it was transported to the installation area by using special modular trawl. The installation was performed by means of Liebherr LR 13000 heavy crawler crane. The lining installation at Unit 2 is followed by the reactor cavity reinforcement and concrete-pouring.
The lining was manufactured by Atomspetsservice, a company of Rosatom State Corporation, and delivered to the Akkuyu NPP construction site by sea.
Sergei Butckikh, AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC First Deputy Chief Executive Offices - Director of NPP under construction, noted, "Works are performed at the Akkuyu NPP Construction Site round the clock, and the reactor cavity lining of Unit 2, which is an important stage, has been completed. The heavyweight cargo from Volgodonsk arrived at the Eastern Cargo Terminal located at the site and was delivered to the power unit under construction by using special trawl. Lining is a permanent formwork, which contributes to the reactor cavity sealing. It is a part of the pool where the refuelling will take place in the future ".
Construction and installation works are performed in all construction areas of main and auxiliary facilities of Akkuyu NPP, namely four power units, on-shore engineering structures, power output system, administrative buildings, training center, NPP physical protection facilities, etc.
