AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC took part in Turkeys major technology exhibition for the first time

October 1, 2021, Istanbul, Turkey. – From 21 to 26 September, the Fourth International Festival of Aviation, Space Aeronautics, Technology – Teknofest was held in the territory of the former Atatürk Airport in Istanbul. This is the largest technology exhibition in Turkey organized by Turkiye Teknoloji Takimi Foundation under the auspices of the Ministry of Industry and Technology of the Republic of Turkey. AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC took part in the Festival for the first time and became one of the major partners of the exhibition. Throughout all days of the festival, the company's booth was working, which became an interactive educational platform. At the booth, a lecture hall was arranged, where expert speeches, demonstrations of documentary videos, and quizzes on nuclear topics with prizes for stand visitors were held.

One of the main objectives of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC's participation in Teknofest was to inform broad public about the Akkuyu NPP construction project, nuclear energy, and nuclear technologies. Lectures by leading Turkish experts in various fields were organized on a daily basis for the audience of the Festival. Specialist of Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey Kübra Şengül made a presentation on the organization of the radioactive waste management process in Turkey, as well as the role of women in the nuclear industry. Head of the Department of Research and Solving Environmental Problems in the Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University Dr. Ahmet Demirak made a presentation on the role of nuclear energy in solving the climate change problem. Faculty lecturer and scientist from the Institute of Nuclear Science of Ankara University, Prof. Dr. Haluk Yücel prepared a presentation about the principles of operation and reliability of nuclear power plants, and about modern safety systems of nuclear power reactors. Nuclear engineer Erol Biçer, who currently works in the Nuclear Thermal-Hydraulics Engineering Laboratory of Seoul National University (South Korea), told the booth visitors about various fields of application of nuclear technologies. A separate block of speeches by experts was dedicated to widespread myths and misconceptions about nuclear energy. A member of the Management Board of the Association of Nuclear Energy Engineers of Turkey Korcan Kayrın and Deputy Director of the Institute of Energy of Istanbul Technical University Senem Şentürk Lüle, Ph.D. delivered presentations on the topic.

The booth audience also saw speeches by Maxim Kucherenko, Head of the Capital Construction Unit of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC, who told the stand visitors about the current status of Akkuyu NPP construction, and by Alexander Voronkov, Director of Rosatom Middle East and North Africa Regional Center, who made a presentation of Rosatom and its principal activity areas in the international market, and also spoke about the Russian VVER technology of Generation 3+ and its references in the world.

The audience was especially interested in screening of episodes of the documentary project "Atoms for Humanity". This is an educational initiative by Rosatom State Corporation, aimed at demonstrating the significance of nuclear technologies for achieving UN goals in the area of sustainable development, as told through personal stories. The Project brings to light the importance of nuclear technologies for development of cities and regions of presence and changing people's lives for the better. The visitors of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC booth were shown the Turkish episode of the documentary, afterwards the viewers could personally meet and talk to the heroes of the episode – a young married couple – Burak and Canan Alatlı, who had received education in Russia as part of training experts for Akkuyu NPP and now work at the construction site of the first NPP in Turkey.

Throughout the whole event young Turkish nuclear engineers were working at the AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC's booth, telling the booth visitors about their education in Russia, their experience working as part of Akkuyu NPP construction project and on significance of nuclear power industry for technological development of Turkey.
