New units of Leningrad NPP generated 30 billion kWh of electricity to unified energy system of Russia
On August 3, a significant output - 30 billion kWh of electricity to the unified energy system of Russia - was produced at the site of the new power units at the Leningrad NPP (a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern, part of ROSATOM Electric Power Division). This includes the total output of power units 5 and 6 (VVER-1200) since their connection to the grid.
Electricity generated by the new power units is in high demand today for the implementation of a number of investment projects that have appeared on the map of region 47 in recent years. The generated electricity will be enough to meet the annual needs of large plants, as well as for the further development of the seaport in Ust-Luga.
“The 30 billion kWh of electricity that units 5 and 6 have generated since their first synchronization with the unified energy system of Russia are equal to two-thirds of the electricity consumed in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region in 2020,” said Vladimir Pereguda, Director of the Leningrad NPP. “The new power units of the LNPP provide replacement capacities that are 20% more efficient than the decommissioned RBMK power units. The energy generated today by the super-powerful VVER-1200 units contributes not only to strengthening the energy security of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, the latter being one of the most industrially developed regions in the country, but also significantly increases the region’s capabilities in creating new energy-intensive, high-tech industries in the future. "
The daily output of each VVER-1200 power unit is about 28 million kWh. Due to the commissioning of the replacement capacities, the company remains the electricity generation leader in the region, meeting more than 30% of electricity needs of North-West residents. The Leningrad NPP share in the energy mix of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region is more than 50%. In addition, the operation of the new units made it possible to avoid about 15 million tons of carbon dioxide emission into the atmosphere.
