One of the worlds powerfull construction cranes was installed and commissioned at Akkuyu NPP construction site
September 25, 2021, Büyükeceli, Mersin Province, Turkey. – The second Liebherr LR 13000 self-propelled caterpillar crane has been installed and put into operation at the Akkuyu NPP construction site. In total, there are five cranes of this model in the world, and two of them are being used at the construction site of the first nuclear power plant in Turkey. This year's key construction and installation operations have already been completed with the help of the crane: in the reactor building of the second power unit, the second tier of the internal containment has been mounted, and the thrust truss of the reactor shaft has been installed.
The Liebherr LR 13000 is the world's most powerful caterpillar crane of conventional design. With the boom reach of 12 meters, it is capable of lifting loads of up to 3,000 tons. The main application of the crane is the construction of power plants and other large industrial facilities, where the lifting of heavy large-sized equipment is constantly required. One of the crane's features is the ability to move with a load attached to the boom. Despite its impressive size, this giant crane is the most economical in the world in terms of transportation, since each of its individual components weighs no more than 70 tons.
“When planning the performance of key construction events, we decided to employ an additional Liebherr LR 13000 crane, similar to the one already operating at the first power unit. The arrival of the second crane of this model at the construction site of Akkuyu NPP is brought about by the need to ensure the mounting of large-sized cargoes and structures at the construction sites of the second power unit and the third power unit. Before transportation to the Akkuyu NPP site, the crane was stationed in Italy; from there, it was brought by sea to Eastern Cargo Terminal. The unique load-lifting equipment was mounted within a limited space, surrounded by a large number of tower cranes; this demanded additional efforts on the part of the assembly team consisting of Russian, Turkish and Dutch specialists," commented First Deputy Chief Executive Officer of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC – Director of the NPP under Construction Sergei Butсkikh.
The first Liebherr LR13000 crane was deployed at the Akkuyu NPP construction site in August 2019. Using the crane, installation of the major components of equipment and building structures was carried out at the first power unit: the nuclear reactor vessel, the body of the corium collecting and cooling device, the support truss and the thrust truss, and the second and third tiers of the internal containment.
